plaster NOUN 1) a soft mixture of lime with sand or cement and water for spreading on walls and ceilings to form a smooth hard surface when dried. 2) (also plaster of Paris) a hard white substance made by adding water to powdered gypsum, used for setting broken bones and making sculptures and casts. 3) (also sticking plaster) an adhesive strip of material for covering cuts and wounds.
VERB 1) cover with plaster; apply plaster to. 2) coat thickly; daub. 3) make (hair) lie flat by applying liquid to it.
DERIVATIVES plasterer noun.
ORIGIN Latin plastrum, from Greek emplastron 'daub, salve' ; sense 2 of the noun derives from the fact that the gypsum originally came from Paris.
